Microwave Devices for Satellite and Spacecraft Communication

Microwaves are short, electromagnetic, and high frequency radiating waves ranging between 300MHz to 300GHz in the electromagnetic spectrum. Metal can reflect these waves completely while non-metals are moderately transparent to these waves

Discovering Microwaves

Microwaves are found at the higher end of radio spectrum. They are different than radio waves. They are divided into sub-bands on the basis of wavelengths. These bands represent different frequencies. Most commonly used bands are L- band, S- band, C-band, X-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band. Microwave communication may take place in both analog and digital formats. Digital communication is considered as the most reliable technology.

Microwaves find applications in satellite and spacecraft communication, wireless networks, radar, remote sensing, medical diathermy and cancer treatment, microwave ovens, and industrial heating. Devices such as SiC and GaN are extensively used in an amplifier technology. They could provide high efficiency and heat tolerance. Technically advanced microwave devices are implemented in telecommunication applications.

Furthermore, microwave devices can be divided into solid state and vacuum-tube based devices. Solid-state microwave devices operate on semiconductors such as silicon or gallium arsenide. The mechanism of vacuum tube based devices depends on the effect of electric or magnetic fields over the ballistic motion of electrons.

World’s largest S-Band Radar

In March 2017, Toshiba Corporation announced ‘S-band weather radar system’, exclusively proposed for Taiwan Central Weather Bureau. The system comprises a world class antenna, which has a range of approximately 400km. This system can support high resolution imaging of precipitation and wind velocity crucial for accurate weather forecasting.

The radar system adopts dual polarization technology and Toshiba’s state-of-the-art microwave transistors for enhanced observation abilities and accuracy. The system will be designed by Toshiba with the help of High Bound Co., Ltd and GECI GROUP (GECI), Spanish system integration and high-technology company.

Market Overview

According to Grand View Research, Inc., the microwave devices market is set to achieve around USD 11.8 billion by 2024. The use of C-band in, Wi-Fi, satellite communication, and weather radar systems may propel the market. Rising demand for navigation and surveillance from military and defense sector is anticipated to drive the growth over the forecast period (2014 to 2024).

Extensive usage of mobile phones and applications in frequency emitting satellite and towers may also propel the expansion. Key companies operating in the market include Communications & Power Industries LLC; MicroWave Technology, Inc.; Toshiba Corporation; Richardson Electronics, and TMD Technologies Ltd.
