Data Center Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) for Reliable Power Management

A power distribution unit (PDU) is the device used to control electrical power runs in a data center. It is equipped with multiple outputs that are designed to distribute electric power. PDUs are specifically used to supply power to networking equipment and computer racks within data centers. Power management and protection is a key challenge for data centers. PDUs can assist in monitoring and improving their efficiency. They can also prevent equipment failure.

Deep Dive into Rack Mounted PDUs

These PDUs can be mounted to an equipment rack to control and monitor the power supply to switches, specific servers, and other components. The four fundamental types of rack PDUs are:
  • Basic PDUs: Offer consistent power supply and are commonly available in different mounting types and densities
  • Metered PDU: Designed with reliable circuit board and digital display that shows voltage, current, and power levels
  • Intelligent PDU: Combination of metered PDU with remote monitoring and controls
  • Switch PDU: Capable of remotely controlling each outlet
Intelligent Power Distribution Units

Recently, companies like Siemon and Chatsworth Products have introduced intelligent PDUs for data centers. They can be used as stand-alone units or can be paired with third-party software. APC Corporation’s Switched Rack PDUs provide advanced personalized power controls and dynamic monitoring. Their remote outlet level controls comprise power on/off functionality that can limit unauthorised usage through remote rebooting. Users can also configure, access, and control these PDUs over secure web, command. The new AP8000 series Switched Rack PDUs have features like temperature/humidity sensors, real power monitoring, and IEC receptacle locks.
