Automotive Adhesives and Sealants Improving Strength of Vehicles

Automotive adhesives and sealants are used in a wide range of applications in the automotive industry. They can be extensively used to reduce noise vibration and hardness (NVH), for sealing and protection, and various other functions. Additionally, to reduce CO2 emissions, automobile manufacturers are focusing on creating high-performance light-weight vehicles using these products. Adhesives are extensively used in the automotive industry to provide strong resistance against impact, heat, and corrosion. Automotive sealants, on the other hand, provide durability, strength, and safety to a vehicle.

Fast-curing Adhesive

Various technologies such as water-based, solvent-based, hot melt, and reactive are used to manufacture adhesives. In 2016, water-based technologies acquired the largest market share due to replacement of traditional solvent-based adhesion products with better sustainable options. These products are manufactured using natural polymers or soluble synthetic polymers. Natural polymers include protein, vegetable, and animal sources. Synthetic polymers include methylcellulose, cellulose ethers, and polyvinyl alcohol.

Reactive is a high-performance adhesive and has exhibited increased demand due to its high bond strength and outstanding durability under hostile environmental conditions. Reactive adhesives are predicted to grow at a considerable rate in the near future.

Sika Corporation recently introduced “SikaMelt 9677” in the US market. It is a polyurethane hotmelt adhesive. This product is appropriate for bonding of foams, woods, textiles, polar plastics, and painted as well as primed steel substrates. This reactive adhesive can be well suited for recreational vehicles (RV) and garage doors.

Market Overview

According to Grand View Research, Inc., the worldwide automotive adhesives and sealants market is likely to reach USD 3.8 billion by 2025. Rising worries regarding excess fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are predicted to surge product demand in commercial as well as passenger vehicles. Additionally, strict government policies regarding use of bio-based adhesives are expected to have a positive influence on the market during the forecast period (2014 to 2025). Greater China is projected to remain a high-growth region for the next few years owing to high automobile production rate, low labor costs, and geographical proximity to emerging countries.

Some of the leading companies operating in the market are Avery Dennison; 3M Inc.; Evonik Industries AG; BASF SE; and AkzoNobel.
