Trivalent Chromium Finishing – An Eco-Friendly Coating

Trivalent chromium finishing or tri-chrome (Cr+3) finishing is a type of coating used in various industrial sectors due to various properties such as corrosions and wear resistance, durability, and a low friction rate. Decorative and hard chrome finishing are its two major types. Decorative finishing is used in producing components with a high glossy finish, while hard chrome finishing is used in producing complex industrial parts. The directive by the European Commission for End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) and creation of environment-friendly coatings to minimize pollution levels has resulted in a rapid shift from hexavalent chromium finishing to tri-chrome coating.

Adherence to Regulations

Major end-users of trivalent chromium finishing are hydraulics, heavy equipment, oil and gas, automotive, aerospace, and others. Among these, the automotive segment accounted for 43.12% of the overall revenue share in 2016. The use of tri-chrome plating for producing decorative pieces on cars coupled with regulations to reduce pollution and minimize vehicle weight are factors expected to fuel the segment demand. Automotive manufacturing hubs, such as Germany, can benefit the most from the use of these coatings.

The aerospace segment is projected to exhibit a healthy CAGR during the forecast period (from 2018 to 2025) owing to high demand for ferrous and non-ferrous components. In addition, increased budgetary spending for space research programs is also expected to drive the segment growth. For instance, ADAMATIS, a U.S.-based advanced materials company, is creating satellite components for pre-treatment and anti-corrosion applications.

Market Outlook

The global trivalent chromium finishing market is projected to reach a valuation of USD 379.1 million by 2025, according to a report by Grand View Research, Inc. High demand for trivalent chromium finishing in automotive, aerospace, heavy machinery, and hydraulic sectors is expected to bode well for the market growth.

Mandatory adoption of these coatings, due to new policies about a suitable substitute for hexavalent chromium finishing, is predicted to spur the market demand over the coming years. Continuous demand for passenger cars and other vehicles is estimated to culminate in high product demand in the forthcoming years. Major market companies in the market are MacDermid, Inc.; Sarrel Group; Ronatec C2C, Inc.; and Kakihara Industries Co., Ltd.
