Polyurea: A Polymer with High Elongation and Tensile Strength

Polyurea is obtained from the reaction of isocyanate compounds and synthetic resin blended polymers through step-growth polymerization. Raw material such as aromatic and aliphatic compounds are used to in the manufacturing process of this polymer. The polymer is extensively utilized in the manufacturing of coatings, lining, adhesives and sealants, and other products.
This polymer comprises several exceptional characteristics such as greater thermal stability, fast curing time, better water insensitivity, and pigment compatibility.

Excellent Caulking Agent
Polyurea comprises wide range of applications in construction, transportation, industrial, and others. High durability and rust prevention capability of polymer encourages its use in construction industry. The compound can be preferred in tank liners, manhole and tunnels, and containment structures due to high reactivity and relative moisture sensitivity of the polymer.  Polyurea-based lining products are used in landfills and waterproofing system due to their high chemical resistance against liquids. The polymer can be also utilized as a caulking agent in control joints and expansion joints in floors and water reservoirs. For instance, Huntsman offers a wide range of methylene diisocyanate (MDI) products that can be used in coating formulations for polyurethanes/polyurea systems. These raw materials can be used in applications such as polyurea spray, concrete floor coatings, liquid waterproofing membranes, bridge decking, and others.

Polyurea used as coatings and sealing materials in marine, aerospace, and automotive.  In terms of Volume, the product utilization in transportation is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2015 to 2022. The polymer can be used as an alternative to metal fastener in automobiles to reduce car weight and enhance efficiency. In addition, growing concerns about green gas emissions is also expected to increase demand for for eco-friendly coatings in automotive industry. This is also expected to boost the demand for polyurea. Demand for this polymer is anticipated to increase in industrial application in the coming years. Changing trend from breakdown maintenance to condition-based monitoring in manufacturing is expected to boost the product demand.

Market Overview
According to a report published by Grand View Research, Inc.; the global polyurea market is anticipated to accomplish a valuation of around USD 936.7 million by 2022. Increasing application of adhesives and sealants as a bonding agent in construction and automotive industries can impel the market from 2012 to 2022. Growing demand for waterproofing membrane in civil construction is anticipated to increase demand for sealing materials.

Some of the key companies operating in the polyurea market include Specialty Products, Inc.; Huntsman; BASF; Versaflex; and Bayer.
