Commercial Seeds; Alchemy of Genetic Code and Agricultural Diversity

21st May 2019: Commercial seeds have gained lucrative opportunities owing to its extensive crop yield and increasing demand due to increase in world population. These offer better uniformity, enhanced color, improved flavor, and disease resistance to the cultivated plants. Rise in disposable income, rapid urbanization, and ongoing development of the agricultural sector will drive demand for commercial seeds during the forecast period (2019-2025).

Modern Plant Breeding Is Set to Develop Seed Varieties

Biotechnology has advanced a step further and has gained agricultural sustainability in terms of increased crop yield for both hybrid and GM seeds. Crops grown from hybrid germination are incapable of producing seeds that can be further used to grow a similar variety of plants; in other words, the plants don’t grow true to their type. This has been attributed as a challenge to the industry’s growth.

A large number of vegetable and spices crops have been hybridized. For instance, cucumber seeds are hybridized using hand pollination and cross-pollination techniques. Furthermore, Nuclear and cytoplasmic sterilizing technologies have become popular in China, India, and Thailand. Such initiatives have taken into account the requirements of developing countries, where the farmers can save, reforest, and exchange seeds that are integral to food sovereignty and security.

Market Insights:

In an attempt to maximize profitability and farmer services, some of the enterprises have now extended their product line to include other crops such as maize, beans, cassava, and sweet potatoes. The aim of releasing crop variety is to enhance overall productivity, production, and anchor to food security. Projects like Agricultural Revolution for Africa (AGRA) and Program for Agricultural Seed Systems (PASS) have intensified efforts to quicken the pace of crop research to release new varieties of hybrid seeds. Africa Rice Program has added a new dimension to the system by introducing high yielding varieties into the seed multiplication system. In 2016, Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) harvested 50 variety of potatoes as a result of their collaboration with researchers of University of Wisconsin-Madison, aiming to preserve potato genetic diversity, eradicate infections, and to offer high quality seed potatoes. Each year, southeastern and southern France grows commercial oilseed rape crops in isolation with a minimum rotational gap of seven years. This has ensured the ecological balance and has also implemented purity protocol throughout the germination process, thus maintaining high seed standards. In addition to germination, players are incorporating advanced technologies like DNA-fingerprinting and chromatography to bring in state-of-the-art products into the Commercial Seeds market.
