Increasing Use of Biological Approach in Integrated Pest Management

Climate changes are leading to increase in pest population, which in turn is resulting in food insecurity and various health problems. This is, thereby, raising the inclination toward integrated pest management (IPM). Primarily used for controlling and preventing the onslaught of insects, IPM is an effective and systematic approach using a combination of various prevention methods. An IPM program is designed on the basis of pest type, location or area, population density, and prevention goals.

Demand for Integrated Pest Management to Remain High in Agriculture Sector

Chemical, physical, biological, and mechanical are key approaches adopted in an integrated pest management program. Chemical is the most widely used approach, owing to easy availability of pesticides. However, rising awareness regarding harmful effects of pesticides and stringent government regulations pertaining to their sale and usage are likely to translate into reduced demand for the chemical approach.

On the other hand, the biological segment is expected to register remarkable growth over the coming years. The approach involves release of a number of natural enemies into crop fields to control weeds, nematodes, vertebrates, plant pathogens, and invertebrates. For instance, potato and tomato growers across Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury, New Zealand, have started using Tamarixia trioaze, a wasp that destroys the tomato potato psyllid pest. The approach received approval from the Environmental Protection Authority in June 2016 and is anticipated to be commercialized on a large scale across New Zealand in the next six months.

Market Insights

The global integrated pest management market is largely driven by rising concerns pertaining to usage of pesticides. This can be coupled with favorable initiatives by governments promoting the adoption of IPM. Increasing focus on addressing issues such as food insecurity is also poised to drive the market. North America will hold a prominent position in the global arena, owing to growing investments in new product development.

Some of the key players in the market are BASF SE, Bayer CropScience LP, Advanced Integrated Pest Management, MB Integrated Pest Control, and IPM Technologies Pty Ltd.
