Reinventing Energy Drinks with Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) Oil

Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are fats present in foods such as palm kernel oil or coconut oil. Triglyceride, commonly known as fats, are either transported into cells and used for energy or are accumulated as body fat.MCTs are metabolized in a way that is different from Long-Chain Triglycerides (LCTs), whichare present in most other foods. Most fats in normal diets consist of long-chain fatty acids that contain 13 to 21 carbon atoms. Fats with short-chain fatty acids contain less than 6 carbons. However, medium-chain fatty acids in MCTs contain 6 to 12 carbons.

Due to the shorter chain length of MCTs, they are rapidly broken down and are absorbed easily into the body. These factors makethem a fast source of energy and less likely to be accumulated as fats. A diet with high MCTs could alsohelp with weight loss through increased fullness, lowered calorie intake, enhanced calorie burning, and less fat storage. Thus, MCTs have also become a popular supplement among bodybuilders and athletes.

MCT’s Newfound Application in Functional/Health Beverages

MCT oil has gained popularity in the food and beverage sectoracross the globe. While some companies are selling MCT oil as a separate product to be mixed with various beverages, other companies are using it in their ready-to-drink products. For instance, Each SKU in Metabrew’s nut-buttered, dairy-free teaand coffee range has 5 gmof MCT oil per 11 oz of drinks. Unlike other butter coffees that have a lot of calories and fats, these drinks contain relatively low calories and are brewed to fit more easily into customers’normal diet.
