Modified Starch to Spur its Commercial Growth

Modified starch, also termed as starch derivatives, are prepared by enzymatically, physically, or chemically treating native starch to change its characteristics. These are extensively used in the food and beverage industry as stabilizing agents, emulsifying agents or thickening agents. Owing to their partly digestible nature and superiority of being gluten-free, they offer lesser fat content than their regular counterpart.

Various Product Variants to Contribute in Substantial Demand

The major product type variants include resistant, starch esters and ethers, pre-gelatinized, cationic and others. In terms of volume, cationic starches segment is estimated to observe rapid growth in the years to come. On account of the product’s exclusive characteristics of emulsification of sizing agents and dry strength, it has extensive use in paper industry. Along with these factors, many other drainage and retention characteristics are expected to increase the product demand in the paper industry over the forecast period. Starch esters and others led the market in the forecast period owing to high demand from end users.

Positive food and beverage industry outlook in India and China will also propel the segment growth. These developing economies are also anticipated to observe a substantial growth in the pharmaceutical industry due to growing customer demand for sophisticated medicines, which will drive the demand in the forecast period.
