Modified Starch to Spur its Commercial Growth

Modified starch, also termed as starch derivatives, are prepared by enzymatically, physically, or chemically treating native starch to change its characteristics. These are extensively used in the food and beverage industry as stabilizing agents, emulsifying agents or thickening agents. Owing to their partly digestible nature and superiority of being gluten-free, they offer lesser fat content than their regular counterpart.

Various Product Variants to Contribute in Substantial Demand

The major product type variants include resistant, starch esters and ethers, pre-gelatinized, cationic and others. In terms of volume, cationic starches segment is estimated to observe rapid growth in the years to come. On account of the product’s exclusive characteristics of emulsification of sizing agents and dry strength, it has extensive use in paper industry. Along with these factors, many other drainage and retention characteristics are expected to increase the product demand in the paper industry over the forecast period. Starch esters and others led the market in the forecast period owing to high demand from end users.

Positive food and beverage industry outlook in India and China will also propel the segment growth. Pea Protein; the New Preferred Egg Alternative

28th May 2019: In an attempt to keep up with altering consumer trends, the food industry is keen on searching for healthier and cost-effective protein alternatives to replace those derived from animal sources.  Whey, gelatin, casein, and ovalbumin, gluten-based albumen products like wheat and the infamous soy, are some of the popular types derived from animals. Good things come in small packages so it’s no big surprise that increased pea intake would offer consumers and food processors nutritive and affordable egg alternative.

The Vegan Category Has Become ‘Plant-Based’

The market has reached a tripping point where millennials, in particular, are keen on consuming foods that are healthier and kinder to animals. Pea protein has been welcomed as the new preferred protein due to its nutritional potential. Available vastly in South Africa, the non-genetically modified protein or the advance seed is easily digestible and has a superior quality amino acid profile. It is gluten-free, allergen-free, lactose-free, and is low on calorie content. Legumes are recognized as a valuable and affordable source of high-quality protein products such as concentrates, flour, and isolates.

In March 2019, Qwrkee, a U.K. based food and drink brand, launched their new line of pea milk products referred as the purest form of pea protein. The company aims at producing consumables that will craft the future for plant-based or vegan movement. The Co-operative Group a.k.a. the Co-op, in 2019 launched a new concept called ‘the bleeding vegan burgers’. Unlike conventional meat burgers, these have stuffed vegan bacon-flavored crisps and have beetroot juice as a key ingredient. In August 2018, it expanded the range by introducing plant-based chili and meatballs.

Although this industry is still in a nascent stage and is not yet available in its raw form to consumers, it is gaining popularity as an additive to protein supplements, energy drinks and bars, fortified cereals, and processed meats. People are looking to eat more ethical, healthy, and sustainable nutrients and the players in the market are creating vegan versions of their favorite meaty food. The market is well positioned to play a progressively vital role in food fortification.

Fructose: Naturally Occurring sugar for the Calorie-Conscious

Fructose, generally known as a ‘fruit sugar’; is a naturally occurring sugar. It is found in numerous plants, fruits, vegetables, berries, and honey. Fructose and other sugars are carbohydrates, which are vital source of the energy.

What is Fructose?

Fructose is a monosaccharide with similar chemical formula as glucose, but different molecular structure. It is one of the three dietary monosaccharides including glucose and galactose that are directly absorbed into the blood. Pure dry fructose is white, odourless crystalline solid, which is very sweet and water-soluble.

Commercially, fructose is extracted from sugar beets, sugar cane, and maize. It is available in the form of crystalline, and syrup. Fructose is extensively used in food and beverages industries to produce several products like moist cookies, nutrition bars, low sugar energy drinks, pourable and frozen juice concentrates, and other such products.

The low glycemic index of fructose has minimal impact on the blood glucose levels as compared to regular sugar. Both these sugars are used and metabolized in different ways. Glucose is digested, absorbed, and transported to the liver and is then released into the blood. Various tissues receive energy with the help of glucose. Insulin is required for this process. Fructose on the other hand, is metabolized in the liver without the help of insulin.

Corn Sweet Crystalline Fructose

Recently, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has developed a dry fructose “CornSweet Crystalline”. It has low Glycemic Index and intense sweetness. This fructose can be used in various of applications such as dairy, beverages, frozen products, baked foods, reduced calorie foods, jams & jellies, sauces & toppings, and canned fruits.

High Folic Acid Intake Can Lower Chances of Aneuploidy

Aneuploidy refers to abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell and results in genetic disorders such as Down’s and Edward’s syndromes. Aneuploidy is associated with deficiency of folate in the human body. Folate is the term for naturally occurring group of water soluble b vitamins. Folic acid is the synthetic version used in food fortification and dietary supplements. It is most commonly recommended for pregnant women to help prevent Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) in newborn babies. The natural sources of folate are leafy vegetables, fruits, okra, asparagus, tomato juice, and orange juice.

Folic acid supplements have also been reported as effective in treating cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and psychiatric illnesses. Newborn babies require around 65 micrograms (mcg) of folate, while pregnant women need at least 600 mcg daily. Hispanic and Latina women are recommended to follow a folate-rich diet due to low folate levels in their blood. Use of tobacco, alcohol or caffeine also affects folate levels in the body, especially in men.

Benefits:-

Male Fertility

According to a recent study by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK on effects of folic acid, men with low levels of this vitamin suffer from low sperm count. For every 100 gram increase of daily folate intake, there was a 3.6% reduction in the chance of chromosomal abnormality.

Hair Growth

Deficiency in folic acid can result in alopecia or hair loss. Hair discoloration occurs on account of megaloblastic anemia—a condition in which abnormally large red blood cells are produced and the total red blood cell count is low. Regular consumption of folic acid can restore hair. A study by the Ontario Veterinary College in Canada demonstrated hair restoration in Charolais calf.

Risk of Excessive Intake:-

While the cases of NTDs in the United States have reduced, it has been found that excessive intake of folic acid can increase the risk for cancer. For instance, postimplementation of folic acid fortification programs in Canada and U.S., an increase in incidence of colorectal cancer has been noticed. High intake of folate can result in deficiency of vitamin B12 among the geriatric populace. Thus, the upper limit for daily intake in male and female adults should not cross 1,000 mcg.

Market Overview:-

The worldwide folic acid market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 3.5% from 2016 to 2025; according to Grand View Research, Inc. Demand of folic acid tablets by pregnant women can spur market growth.

Pharmaceuticals were the largest market application in 2015. This can be attributed to the extensive demand of folic acid in tabular form to treat cardiovascular and urinary disorders. Asia Pacific led the global market in 2015 due to abundant supply of raw materials from China. Regions within APAC, such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, have introduced folic acid fortification in wheat and oil. This can help fight anemia. Some major market players are Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd.; Zydus Pharmaceuticals Ltd.; and BASF SE.
